About Toetu'u’s work
Born in Hawaiʻi of Tongan and Hawaiian-Filipino descent, Aisea Toetu'u co-founded Soul Signature Tattoo in Honolulu in 2004. Bestowed the Sulu'ape title, he is regarded as the leading contemporary practitioner of Tongan tatatau, working with the Tongan community to revive hand-tap tattooing that had largely disappeared after 19th-century missionary bans.
