Not all Polynesian tribal tattoos are equal. Some are built with story, placement, flow, meaning and cultural responsibility. Others are only decorative patterns with no real structure or intention. This grading tool is designed to help people understand the difference.
This grading system is educational only. It does not determine a person's worth, identity, ancestry or right to wear a tattoo. A full cultural review may require consultation with the wearer and artist because meaning, lineage, family story and intention cannot always be judged from an image alone.
Traditional: judged against Polynesian tatau, tā moko, kākau, patutiki and related traditions. Cultural structure, story and authenticity carry the most weight.

How grading works
Each tattoo is scored 1–10 across twelve categories. Weights shift by mode: Traditional favors cultural structure, story, meaning and authenticity; Contemporary favors technique, linework, contrast, boldness and flow. The final score is a percentage out of 100.
FAQ
Can a tattoo be fully graded from a photo?+
Not completely. A photo can show technique, contrast, balance, linework and visual structure. But story, family meaning, ancestry and personal intention may require more context from the wearer and artist.
Does a low grade mean my tattoo is bad?+
Not necessarily. It means the tattoo may be weak in certain areas such as structure, meaning, flow or execution. The goal is education, not shame.
What makes a Polynesian tattoo authentic?+
Authenticity comes from intention, structure, cultural understanding, placement, flow, motif usage and respect for meaning. It is not just about filling space with tribal patterns.
Can this tool tell if my tattoo is culturally appropriate?+
It can give visual and structural feedback, but cultural appropriateness may require deeper context about the wearer, the artist, the story and the symbols used.
