Polynesian Tattoo Cover-Ups: What Works and What Doesn't

Polynesian tribal work is the most common cover-up style in the industry — heavy black, geometric fields, and dense line work absorb existing ink like nothing else. But not every tattoo can be covered, and not every Polynesian design is a smart cover-up.
What Polynesian can cover well
Old faded black work, tribal, text, small color tattoos, and light-to-medium grey work are all viable candidates. Filled black sections, Marquesan pattern density, and shark-teeth bands can absorb most of them without shifting your final design.
Names of ex-partners are the industry's most-covered tattoo. A single koru, hei matau or spearhead panel can neutralize them entirely.
What doesn't cover easily
Fully saturated red, deep saturated color pieces, and heavy solid black rectangles are hard to cover with Polynesian work — the black is already there. In those cases, expect the artist to recommend 1–2 laser sessions first to lighten the base.
Design compromises
A cover-up Polynesian piece often has to be larger than a fresh design. The composition has to route dense sections over the old ink and lighter sections over clean skin. This can push a chest panel into a chest-and-shoulder combo, or a forearm piece into a full sleeve.
A good Polynesian cover-up artist will show you the tracing over your existing tattoo before session one. If they don't, ask.

Do I need laser removal first?
Not always. Faded work, tribal and small pieces usually cover directly. Solid color or dense black work benefits from 1–2 laser sessions to lighten the base before Polynesian cover-up.
Will the old tattoo show through?
With good composition, no. The old lines are absorbed into dense sections or spearhead bands. A poorly planned cover-up leaves visible ghosts, which is why the design has to be drawn over the actual tattoo, not on paper.
How much bigger does the cover-up need to be?
Usually 30–100% larger than the original. The exact ratio depends on your existing tattoo's contrast and where it sits.
