Polynesian Tattoo Aftercare: Healing a Large Tribal Piece

First 48 hours

Leave the artist's wrap on for the time they specified (usually 2–24 hours for cling film, up to 5 days for a second-skin patch). When you remove it, wash with lukewarm water and a fragrance-free soap, pat dry with a clean paper towel, then apply a thin layer of unscented healing balm.

Expect plasma weeping and mild swelling for the first two days — normal for dense black work.

Days 3–14: the peel

Around day 3–5 the tattoo starts to peel like a sunburn. Do not pick or scratch. Wash gently 2–3 times a day and moisturise with a thin layer of balm. Ashiness is normal; the ink is still there under the flaking skin.

Hand-tapped tatau heals slightly differently — the wound is broader and the scab is thicker. Follow your tufuga's specific instructions; traditional healing often uses coconut oil or specific plant-based remedies.

Sun, saltwater and the gym

No direct sun for 4 weeks minimum, and lifelong sunscreen once healed — UV fades solid black faster than any other style. No pools, no ocean, no saunas until fully healed (usually 2–4 weeks). Light gym work is fine after a week; anything that stretches or sweats over the piece should wait longer.

When to touch up

Book a touch-up around 6–8 weeks post-healing to fill any patchy spots. Most reputable Polynesian artists include one free touch-up within 3 months.
